Cultural tourism

Cultural tourism is one of the most popular and mass kinds of tourism. In the world the cultural tourism has been as a separate trend and each year it is developed in Kazakhstan.

Kazakhstan is the state with rich historical and cultural heritage. Being situated in the center of Eurasia, Kazakhstan is in the crossroads of the ancient world civilizations, thruways, social and economic, cultural and ideological connections between West and East, South and North. In the ancient times the steppes of Kazakhstan had the Great Silk Way. During different periods of history in the territory of todays Kazakhstan states with unique cultural history appeared and developed.

On the number and diversity of monuments Kazakhstan can be put in one line with such states as India, China, states of Mediterranean and Middle East and it is a unique museum in the open air. Many monuments are acknowledged by UNESCO as the monuments of universal importance.

Diversity of cultural values of Kazakhstan is more than 25 thousand immovable monuments of history, archeology, architecture and monumental art, more than 2 million 56 thousand units of cultural values located in expositions and funds of 89 state museums, 66 million 840 thousand volumes of books, rare manuscript and publications stored in 3495 state libraries.

The great impulse for the development of tourist cluster (pilgrimage tourism, historical and archeologicaltourism) was the State program “Cultural heritage” developed and realized under the initiative of the President Nazarbaev. The realization of the program has been started in 2004, later there were developed another two stages of the program: from 2007 till 2009, and from 2009 till 2011.

At creation and elaboration of tourist routes there were used scientific discoveries and recommendations of archeologists that are engaged in studying and reconstruction of historical and cultural heritage of Kazakhstan in terms of the State program “Cultural heritage”.

Overview of Kazakhstan regions

  • Akmola region

    Culture of middle ages of Kazakhstan attracts by its beauty and uniqueness. Deep in Kazakhstan in 160 km to the north-west from Astana there is Kurgalzhino National Sanctuary.

  • Aktobe region

    Aktobe oblast borders with six oblasts of the republic, and with Orenburg oblast of the Russian Federation in the north and with Karakalpak autonomy of the Republic of Uzbekistan in the south.  

  • Almaty region

    Semirechye (Almaty oblast) is one of the most attractive regions for the development of tourism, since the territory of this area has very different monuments of nature, history and culture.

  • Astana

    Astana city is the capital of the Republic of Kazakhstan, political and administrative, scientific and cultural center of the state.

  • Atyrau region

    Atyrau oblast is one of the oblasts of West Kazakhstan that has many mountain slopes and absolutely white stone spheres of fanciful forms that sometimes reach up to 2 meters in diameter.

  • East Kazakhstan region

    The beauty of the nature of East Kazakhstan is amazing. Steppes and semi-deserts of Asia in combination with mountainous taiga of Syberia give uniqueness to the landscape of this region:  deserts, steppe, taiga, mountains with old glaciers, many rivers and lakes.

  • Karaganda region

    People of Kazakhstan call the territory of central Kazakhstan Sary-Arka. Karagandy oblast is defined by the line of hills with mountain groups along it: Kyzylaray Mountains in the east, Karkaralinsk mountains in the north-east, Ulytau mountains in the west.

  • Kostanay region

    Majority of people associate Kostanai oblast with virgin lands. Today this is the biggest supplier of cereal crops. The region is also famous for manufacturing and food industry.

  • Kyzylorda region

    The Great Silk Way is one of the most significant achievements in the history of world civilization. Branching network of caravan ways crossed Europe and Asia from Mediterranean till China.

  • Mangystau region

    People that visited Mangistau oblast and those who live there call this place a unique peninsula.  This region is rich with oil and gas deposits, ore material and minerals. 

  • North Kazakhstan region

    North-Kazakhstan is rightfully considered the north gates of Kazakhstan with administrative center Petropavlovsk, which appeared in 1752 as military and strategic object of the Russian empire due to its convenient geographical location.

  • Pavlodar region

    Pavlodar oblast is famous for its amazing Bayan-Aul national park, one of the most picturesque places of the state.  It is situated in 100 km from Ekibaztuz, city with high-developed industry.

  • South Kazakhstan region

    Kazakhstan is the territory of ancient civilizations. From times immemorial people of the Kazakh steppe created bright and unique culture. At the crossroad of the Great Silk Way the land of South Kazakhstan became the cradle of the Kazakh statehood.

  • West Kazakhstan region

    West Kazakhstan from time immemorial was at the crossroad of the Great Silk Way.  This is one of the most amazing corners of our state. It borders with Orenburg, Samara, Saratov, Volgograd, Astrakhan, Atyrau, Mangistau, Aktobe oblasts.  

  • Zhambyl region

    the territory of Zhambyl oblast lies from big desert Betpak-dala till amazing Tien-Shan and from Chu valley till Karatau Mountains. Administrative center of the oblast is Taraz city situated in the south of Kazakhstan.
